Description
Hemoccult II Fecal Occult Blood Test Kit, Triple Slide
The Hemoccult II Fecal Occult Blood Test Kit, Triple Slide is a guaiac-based fecal occult blood test (gFOBT) designed to screen for hidden (occult) blood in stool specimens. This test kit supports routine colorectal cancer screening programs and evaluation of gastrointestinal bleeding when used as directed by a healthcare professional. The triple-slide format allows collection of multiple specimens on a single card to help improve detection of intermittent bleeding.
Intended Use
Hemoccult II is intended for the qualitative detection of occult blood in fecal samples. The test is used as a screening aid and is not diagnostic on its own. Positive results require clinical follow-up and confirmatory evaluation as determined by a clinician.
How It Works
This kit uses the guaiac reaction to detect the pseudoperoxidase activity of heme. After stool samples are applied and allowed to dry, a developer solution is applied to the reverse side of the slide. A blue color change in the test area within the specified reading time indicates the possible presence of blood. Because some foods, supplements, and medications can affect results, patient preparation and adherence to collection instructions are important.
Key Features
- Triple-slide card format supports multiple specimen collections in one kit.
- Qualitative visual read with a distinct color change after developer application.
- Designed for screening workflows in clinics, physician offices, and laboratories.
- Room-temperature storage for unopened components when stored per labeling.
- Patient-friendly sampling when used with appropriate collection materials and instructions.
Typical Kit Components
- Hemoccult II triple-slide test card(s) with specimen windows and flap closures
- Developer solution (as supplied/configured for the kit)
- Patient collection and return instructions (varies by packaging)
Specimen Collection Overview
- Collect stool according to clinician instructions and kit guidance, avoiding contamination with urine or toilet water.
- Apply thin smears to the designated windows for each sample as directed and close flaps.
- Allow the card to dry and return/store per instructions until testing.
- Apply developer to the reverse side test areas and read results within the specified time window.
Result Interpretation
A blue color in the reaction area is interpreted as a positive indication for occult blood; absence of blue color is interpreted as negative, when read within the required timeframe. Results can be influenced by intermittent bleeding, sample handling, dietary peroxidases, and certain medications. Follow all labeling for timing, quality control checks (if included), and result reporting.
Storage and Handling
Store components at the temperature and conditions stated on the package labeling. Do not use damaged cards, expired developer, or materials that have been improperly stored. Keep developer tightly closed and handle according to safety instructions.
Warnings and Limitations
- For in vitro diagnostic use.
- Not intended to diagnose colorectal cancer or any specific condition without further evaluation.
- False positives and false negatives may occur; follow dietary/medication guidance when provided.
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment and follow biohazard precautions for specimen handling.
